Eoin O'Neill

I moved over to the States from the UK in 2004, at which point I effectively 'retired' from my career as a civil engineer working in the oil industry, to concentrate on writing (social and political implications of the Reformation in early 17th century Europe), music and of course woodworking in its many manifestations, including lutherie.  Woodworking is also, of course, engineering, utilizing the 'original' engineering material. My earlier work as a writer and film producer working in London, England, helped to develop my sense of the visual aesthetic. Conversely, as an engineer, I tend to find myself drawn to the structurally functional and utilitarian ethos. These two strings of thought meld well in unique contemporary interpretations of classic furniture styles, as exemplified by the outstanding work of Jeffry Lohr. Whilst at a personal level, I do not necessarily feel constrained by the conventions of classic furniture design; I do nevertheless recognize and feel a deep respect and debt for the enormous weight of art and craftsmanship of centuries past.  In these days of mass production, instant gratification and self-centeredness, I applaud those who strive to provide a conduit for the art, skills, tradition and hard-won knowledge of the past for the benefit of generations to come. Jeffry Lohr is such a man, and I am deeply sensible of the privilege of having the opportunity to work with him.
