How to enroll in the Advanced Joinery Class

#1. Let Me Know You are Interested:    The first thing you need to do is let me know you’re interested in securing a place on one of the 2011 course dates. Send me an email with your name & contact info to: JDLohrWood@aol.com with the SUBJECT line: ‘Register me for the 2011 Advanced Joinery Class List’. I simply need to know that you’re interested. You don’t need to specify which dates at this point. I just need to know your name, address, daytime phone number and which month/year you attended Practical Woodworking 101 (as near as you can remember). Please don’t phone me or write to me - just send me an email. If I don’t hear from you, I won’t know you’re interested, and I can’t move you on to the next stage.

#2. How We Will Enroll Students:  Please understand that I run a busy, professional furniture studio, and I can only spend so much time running woodworking classes. That means the number of bench positions available is extremely limited in relation to the number of aspirants to those positions. As you remember from your experience of the Practical Woodworking 101 class, there was a fairly complicated competitive procedure to secure a place. I, and I believe you as well, really would prefer to do away with such complications.  For the Advanced Joinery class, I shall be instigating a randomly selected lottery system, in which you will have three chances to secure a place on the date or dates of your choice. This lottery will be completely random, and everyone will have an equal chance of securing a position. Initially, eight bench positions will be offered for each class, increasing the staff-to-student ratio over the Practical Woodworking 101 course.

#3. How to Secure your Advanced Joinery Lottery Ticket:  After you email me as per #1 above to inform me of your interest,  I will then send you a reply email which will contain an attachment with three lottery tickets, and the URL for the relevant Advanced Joinery class pages on my website. From these pages, you will decide which 2011 Advanced Joinery class dates are of most interest to you, and you will print and return your three lottery tickets to me, by hard copy mail via USPS with your name and your favored dates noted on each lottery ticket. I must receive your lottery tickets by June 15, 2010 for you to be entered into the lottery for 2011 bench positions. No late entries will be accepted. You may, if you wish, use all three tickets for the same class to increase your chances of being picked for that specific week, or you may spread them out over two or three different 2011 course offering dates if you have no preference. Each ticket will carry equal weighting and an equal chance of being picked.

#4 Expiration Dates of Lottery Tickets.  A further and completely separate lottery will be held for 2012 bench positions and each subsequent year, so if you are unsuccessful for 2011, you will be able to re-apply for the following year in due course.  However, if you were unsuccessful in the previous year's lottery, your previous tickets will be carried forward to the next year's lottery, doubling your chance of success in year two, tripling it in year three, etc. In this way, we feel those that are most determined to gain entry will ultimately do so.

#5  Annual Drawing Process:  On June 26, 2010, eight lottery tickets for each of the 2011 Advanced Joinery Course Offerings will be selected at random by students attending the June 2010 Practical Woodworking Class. No better proof of the randomness and completely unbiased nature in which all the 2011 Advanced Joinery Bench Positions will be filled.  You only need one of your three lottery tickets to be chosen to secure you a bench position and the first of your tickets so chosen will determine which week you are offered. Two reserve tickets will also be picked, should anyone have to drop out or decline their assignment.

#6. Course Assignment Notification and Tuition Deposit:  You will be advised whether or not you have been successful in securing a bench position via email by July 15th of the year proceeding.  2011 results will be revealed on July 15, 2010. The 2012 results will be revealed July 15, 2011, etc... Deposits to secure your bench position will be due August 15th of each proceeding year.  This is also the point at which you should decide on your wood options.

#7. Conclusion.  I hope you will appreciate that this system is entirely fair to everyone. Unfortunately, since the Advanced Joinery course has become available, the number of positive responses I have had from everyone has far outweighed the number of bench positions that I can offer, and I have had to devise this lottery system to give everyone an equal chance of success. Some of you will be disappointed, but equally some of you will be successful. Statistically, your chances will increase each year as the pool of eligible students decreases and your number of tickets increases so please don’t lose hope if you’re not successful on your first attempt.

Good luck to you!
